Approximately 50 vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the German city of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to law enforcement.

Vehicles, building surfaces and postboxes were marked, sometimes with swastikas, they stated in a official communication.

Police report they were notified during the night on Wednesday evening, when a man noticed that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued substance.

The substance had been applied in the shape of a banned symbol, they stated.

Law enforcement then located numerous other smeared automobiles and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.

Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under legislation banning the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.

Law enforcement state early analysis indicate the fluid was most likely blood from a person.

"At present there remains no lead as to its source; investigators are currently not cognizant of any injuries in connection with the event," they stated.

Local authorities said they were attempting "to resolve the incident" and have asked to the residents for details.

A senior representative stated the incident rendered him speechless and had to be addressed quickly.

"This event strikes at the core of Hanau and revives the wounds of the far-right attack five years ago," he posted on online, recalling the murder of nine people by a gunman targeting individuals of immigrant origin in 2020.
