Colombia's President Warns 'I Will Take Up Arms Once More' should US Invades.

President Trump along with Colombia's president have intensified the volume of their exchange, further raising tensions bilaterally after US forces attacked Venezuela in an operation to oust Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro from his position.

"He runs cocaine mills and cocaine factories and his time is running out," Trump remarked.

Rising Threats coupled with Allegations

Talking to journalists over the weekend, the American leader suggested similar military action against Colombia, stating the country faces serious problems and governed by an unwell individual who enjoys creating narcotics and selling it to the United States."

Although Colombia remains the globe's biggest producer of cocaine, there is no evidence implicating Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is directly involved in the business.

A Strained Partnership

This nation was historically a close partner of the US in the struggle against narcotics trade and benefited from bipartisan support from American politicians, yet ties have soured significantly after Trump came to office.

The nation's illicit drug economy is mainly overseen by criminal organizations like the Clan del Golfo, another leftist insurgency and dissident factions of the former Farc guerrillas, most of its former fighters disbanded subsequent to a landmark accord.

The President's Defiant Rebuttal

In response to a query whether armed intervention similar to Venezuela was being considered against his country, Trump replied: "That seems like a good idea to me."

President Petro, an ex-guerrilla fighter who disarmed in the 1990s, rejected these allegations. "I am neither an illegitimate leader and I am not involved in narcotics," he stated.

"Trump speaks without information. End the false accusations," he posted in a message.

"Should American forces attack civilians, they will become a multitude of fighters in the hills. And if they detain the nation's leader, whom a significant portion of Colombians loves and respects, they will release the fierce spirit of the people," he admonished.

From Insurgent to Leader

He passed part of his youth belonging in the left-wing M-19 guerrilla group though it is believed to have ever participated in combat. Following his disarmament, he was involved in creating the nation's constitution over three decades ago and later became a respected lawmaker. He held the office of mayor of the capital city prior to his election the presidency.

"I pledged to never again hold a weapon again ... but for the homeland I shall resume the fight," he said.

Increased Security along with Broad Rejection

Minister Pedro Sánchez announced that Petro's security detail had been reinforced.

A segment of Colombia’s right wing opposition have allied themselves with Trump's stance, however, leaders spanning Colombian politics have condemned the threats of a US attack targeting Colombia.

Bilateral and Economic Sanctions

The US withdrew his travel authorization following he called on American soldiers to ignore orders that violate law. Later, in October, authorities imposed economic restrictions against the president, the first lady and various associates.

At the same time as the US increased its military presence in the Caribbean and targeting suspected drug boats to pressure Venezuela’s Maduro, the US also carried out operations on maritime targets in Pacific waters adjacent to Colombia.
