Patients Coming Off Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that patients who come off new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a major health publication shows that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals buying these medications need to be cognizant of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.

Analyzing Approaches

The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Researchers emphasize that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally see a less rapid creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Doctors believe the mechanism of the drugs explains the amplified weight return.

The injections copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Issue?

The NHS recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, considering the high risk of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful return of appetite.

"I experienced a switch activating and you become ravenous," said a patient.

This difficulty is compounded if patients have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Growing Use

Survey data indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among women than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined lifestyle support.
