The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Win at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Might Solve This

Each time a prominent awards ceremony nears, one notices a demand for the addition of new categories to acknowledge unsung work and delight the hearts of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. The same goes for board games, this being someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing and significant. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and typically start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that movie academies don’t do it. But it is a necessary evil in the world of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Not so for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Consider three of this year’s best games, each quite distinct: structural challenges from a specific release, intense tile-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. What category would fit them among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers launched regularly lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked completely that year
  • Another creative title missed out during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
  • Only a few puzzle games managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often modest productions, but the art behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most popular titles globally maintaining this status for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals well-known building titles competing to become highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. You could fill five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers are working at the demanding boundary of video game design, developing some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Similar to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
